What is The Work of Byron Katie ?

The Work of Byron Katie (or The Work) is a way of working with the mind to identify, question and undo the repetitive, stressful patterns that cause suffering in our lives. As Byron Katie says, it’s not what happens to us, it's what we think about what happens to us that makes us suffer.

The Work is just four simple questions-

  • Is it true?
  • Can you absolutely know it's true?
  • How do you react, what happens when you believe that thought?
  • Who would you be without that thought?

plus turnarounds. The Turnarounds give us a way of experiencing the opposite of what we believe to be true.

You might experience a stressful emotion, or have a reaction to a situation that surprises you or you may behave in a way you really didn’t want to. These experiences can be seen as alarm bells to wake you up to your thoughts and point you back to self-inquiry through The Work. They are gifts which can bring freedom when you question your thoughts in the situation.

The Work is a radically simple process where we get to see reality as it is, not as we think it is. The answers you get when you’re new to it can be just as profound as when you’ve been doing The Work for years. And it’s a practical, how-to, living meditation that’s easy to implement in daily life. Anyone can do TW. There is just one prerequisite - an open mind.
